This is the final poster for my vis comm assignment. I wanted to keep the whole thing pretty simple so I overlaid a French flag over the racing helmet and found the sort of font I wanted. I wanted a thin, fancy hotel sort of font.
I like to look at dafont.com for new fonts and I always check the copyright information for them to make sure they can be used the way that I am going to use it. I had to be extra careful when I did the posters for my high school theatre department because that was a public viewing.
Grand Prix Poster
Friday, February 21, 2014
Here is one of the preliminary designs for one of my posters for vis comm. I just wanted to keep it simple and get the point across. I like it for the most part, but the colors are just...there and I want to do something more with them, I just don't know what. It probably isn't the design that I'm going to go with. I have another with a helmet and Grand Prix above it with 2014 below it. I don't know where I'll put Paris on it, but the helmet is the French Flag.
It's a Big Bright Beautiful World

These are some of the pictures that I took for my old high school's production of Shrek.
Taking pictures for the theatre department was how I figured out that that was what I wanted to do essentially with my life. I loved taking pictures of the cast in and out of character.
It was so much fun to be on the stage and be taking pictures of a completely serious scene one minute and the next having one of the actors leaning as close as they could to my camera while making a completely ridiculous face.
Because of the snow days and weather I wasn't able to come in and take pictures during their rehearsals. These were taken on the Thursday and Friday nights of the show with my telephoto lens from the booth.

Building Blocks

I can't say I'm too excited at all to work on the bandsaw. I don't like putting my fingers near pointy objects moving at a fast pace. I like my fingers being attached to my body. I would say that I have a healthy fear since once my mom was trying to fix our lawn mower and had to get stitches when it didn't go right.
On top of that I am terrible at doing art related things that require building or sewing or anything hands on that isn't drawing or painting. I like my camera and computer, not tools.
Anyway. Here are pictures of the piece of wood I made in to more pieces.

This is a preliminary sketch for what I want my box to look like...though it isn't a box. It's going to hold shark teeth.
Black Lights
Even though I am not enrolled in any photo media classes, I am still coming up with different ideas for photo shoots (for lack of a better word or description). My friends like to help, because they like to be in the pictures, like the blood ones. The most recent idea was black lights.
We got some neon and glow in the dark paint and some black light lightbulbs and set to work. Of course, this idea came at about 1:00AM so we didn't actually take that many pictures before we were all ready to go to sleep.
It was fun regardless. I painted some patterns on to two of my friends and then we put one black light into a lamp and the other into the ceiling appendage. It was kinda freaky actually.

The white paint for my friend Andy didn't work as well as I thought it would. It was neon or black light, but I figured that since white objects and clothing did well under black light, that the paint would too. I did not assume correctly. The yellow would have been better for him.
I have included the last picture so you can see what the paint looked like in normal lighting. The black light is still on in the doorway, so that is why the blue paint on the left side (the viewer's right) looks so bright.
Yay! Another Poster...

My second studio class is Vis Comm 130 and our third assignment is to make a poster for either a bicycle race (Tour de France), the Grand Prix, or a marathon set in New York, Paris, Rio, or Miami.
I know absolutely nothing about Rio, so I didn't chose that as my city and narrowed it down to Paris or Miami. I really like my ideas for Paris though. The event I chose was the Grand Prix.
For Monday we had to have some basic design ideas for what we wanted for our poster. For tomorrow we are supposed to have three preliminary designs for the poster. The picture of the sketches that is on this post is of my sketchy ideas for Monday.

I'm not entirely excited for this project? I've made a handful of posters in the past year and a half and it isn't my favorite process to go through because I feel like by the end that I'm hitting my head against the wall.
In high school I did the posters for our theatre department and even though I am no longer going there the theatre director asked if I would do the poster for the musical this year. So on one of the days of Winter Break I went in to the school and hung out in his classroom and worked on the poster for 8 hours straight. I finished it and was happy with it, but let me tell you, I am seriously poster-ed out.
If you're curious, this is the poster I did for them. They did Shrek: The Musical. I also did production pictures for the show.
More Tablet Drawing Stuff
Sunday, February 16, 2014
I know that this doesn't really have much to do with either of the studio classes that I am taking, but I'm actually really really happy with this drawing so I wanted to post it. I like working with my tablet and I feel like I am also getting better at drawing my own style of cartooned people. Anyway, this started as a drawing I did during my comms class and then it just kind of grew from there. I like how it looks when I copy the files and overlay the copies on top of the originals.
It's a character from a TV show that I really like. In the show he's currently being possessed by a demon and the potential for his character is really interesting.
Redesigning the American Flag
Sunday, February 2, 2014
I am in Vis Comm 201 for my second studio class and our second assignment was to redesign the American flag. I honestly had no good ideas for it, but I was talking to my roommate about it and she goes "The right to bare arms! Get it? Like, bear arms? You could draw bear arms!" and it was silly and I laughed, but then I started thinking about it.
And this is what I got to...
It's a pun in several ways the "bear arms" and she in the original image she is literally baring her forearm. I like it because it's like a pun-y way to show how America is focused on guns and women having no control over a lot of things they should like their bodies and things like that and I dunno, I just like it.
I did it on my tablet and I actually like it. The font was weird and I chose the closest one I could find in Photoshop because I didn't want to try and piece together the font because that gives me a headache. I really like working with my tablet, I don't think I'm all too great at it, but it's still fun.

Wayfinding
These are the photos I have so far from our way finding project. I seriously had no idea where the Underground was for months after I came to KU and the first time that I went in was last week and that's because it's the only place I can get food on Tuesdays. So I think the Underground was a good idea to wayfind to.
The first ones were the location photos.
These were placement photos to get an idea on how big the actual signs should be and what the finalized product would look like.
