Book Progress...or not.

My last post was originally going to be photographs of the process of me finishing the book, like the physical one. Unfortunately printing was such a hassle today that I didn't have the chance to even really start my book so I'm going to post like the finished spreads of ALL the stuff. Which was also kinda weird since no one really knew what was what. I'm just glad that I didn't wind up needing to reprint anything because I already spent like $40 on supplies and printing seven pages of the book. I'm actually really excited to put the book together, if not a little freaked out about finishing it and everything else on time. Hopefully this endeavor will go well with no bumps in the road. Fingers crossed! So heres to the last post of Emily Wolf's Think and Make Blog!

Table of Contents and Various Others

These are the spreads for the various inside things, the table of contents, title page, etc. They're all kinda minimal, but I like that. I'm very bad at finding an in between for minimal and waaaay too much which is unfortunate because I always tend towards the too much side of things. Oh, there's also the 'About the Author' but I think that I'm going to put that on the inside slip of the book jacket. I don't it on the back page. That isn't the picture that I'm going to use though, I hardly have any pictures of myself because I'm normally the one taking pictures. The only ones I have of myself are from my involvement in the Renaissance Festival and I'm in my costume for those so I don't think those would be good to use. And I didn't get senior pictures taken so it will take some digging.

Book Jackets

These are my first three book jackets. I'm not overly fond of any of them actually. I feel like they're all pretty plain? I don't know, I'm going to see what everyone else's look like and see if I can come up with better ideas. Or if someone else can give me a better idea. I'm just trying not to go overboard with any of the designing of it I guess, like I did for the first spreads. Less is more I suppose.

Final VIS COMM Project

For our final vis comm project we had to pick a book to design the cover of. The two that I most wanted to do were The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or The Hobbit. I don't know much about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a book versus the movie except for that the shoes are silver in book instead of ruby. They made them ruby in the film because of technicolor or something like that, which was a cool idea but no one really knows that they changed it so I think it's a cool little fun fact. I really like The Hobbit, I enjoy reading it because it is a fun little book with weird sayings and made up ideas to fit the likes of Hobbits and Bilbo Baggins. I chose to do The Wonderful Wizard of Oz though because I was afraid that I would be influenced too much by recent propaganda from The Hobbit films. I'm not done with the cover, but this is what I have so far.

I decided that I didn't like how it was going and this week and weekend I'm going to draw it out and scan it in and fiddle with it with my tablet because I feel like that is a better idea than trying to manipulate images into what I want versus just drawing them out.

Annie Leibovitz

The next few posts were queued for next week, but since they have to be posted by tonight, they're getting posted now instead.

I absolutely LOVE Annie Leibovitz's pictures. I really like her style and the sort of softness that her photographs have, as well as the color palette. From what I have read in her interviews or quotes I like what she has to say about photography and about the people that she photographed. I relate to some of what she has said about photographers in general, about how they aren't as social because they're lazy or behind the camera you can forget that you're even part of the image.

This was the last professional photograph taken of John Lennon before his death. In a piece that I read she said that she promised Lennon that the picture would be on the cover and it was.

In an interview Annie Leibovitz said this that was her favorite picture that she had taken. It was taken when she was on tour with the Rolling Stones.

This photograph caused a lot of controversy when it came out because Miley Cyrus was still underage and working for Disney at the time. It upset a lot of parents. I remember when the photo was released, I was probably twelve or so and I can even remember it being a big deal.

Before I knew who Annie Leibovitz was I had seen these pictures and I recognized the style from the Les Miserables photo shoot. I really like these pictures though. She was commissioned by Disney for "A Year of a Million Dreams" to photograph celebrities as Disney characters.

Spread Revision

This has been sitting as a draft for a while, I thought it was published and I have no idea what I was originally going to put on this post...oh well. I'll post some of the WIP (work in progress) spreads and such from the book project. I'm actually pretty fond of this project. The photo one is definitely my favorite though, because we finally got to do photography, my reason for coming here, instead of graphic design or industrial design stuff. And I really like this book project too because it isn't either of those too!

These were the two right before the final set. Which I just accidentally published instead of waiting for tomorrow like I wanted to in case I got the Hockney references before I published it.

Final Pages (except for my citations...)

These are the final pages for my book, except for the citations. I don't have all of them yet so it's missing the ones for David Hockney. Over all I liked this project. It was pretty fun, I'm just kinda worried about constructing the book. I'm really afraid that I'll mess it up in some way, because I don't really understand all of the steps in putting it together. I think that my spreads and such look good, I'm not good at this aspect of design, but I think that these look okay and I'm happy with how they've turned out.

Okay, so they look kinda odd because for some reason the boundaries didn't transfer or whatever to the JPEG from the PDF or from the INDD file to the PDF. I don't know. The important parts are there so it doesn't matter.
